How the Malaysian student pass works, step by step

Every international student needs a student pass for a programme longer than three months. EMGS sets out the process in eight steps, from the online application to the endorsement in your passport.

International students in Malaysia study on a student pass, which Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) processes for any study programme longer than three months. EMGS describes the process in eight steps.

  1. Apply online. An account is created and the student pass applied for at visa.educationmalaysia.gov.my.
  2. Upload the documents the EMGS guidelines ask for (see our article on the documents for a new student pass).
  3. Receive the Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) once the application is approved.
  4. Get a single entry visa. Depending on nationality, this is a visa on arrival, a single entry visa from a Malaysian embassy or consulate, or an e-Visa for the countries EMGS lists.
  5. Fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within the three days before arrival.
  6. Travel to Malaysia.
  7. Complete the post-arrival medical screening at a clinic registered for it.
  8. Have the student pass endorsed by the Immigration Department, which your institution helps with.

The application includes your offer letter, so it starts once the university has made you an offer.
